In honor of Pete today, who had an interesting debate with me every couple days about something political, I make one of my very few political opinion posts today....

I am a Republican. A Grand Old Party guy. Sort of.

How does one become a Republican? It's a lot like religion. First, be born in Indiana. Second, live in a red county in a red state. Third, see some of the more extreme "distribution of wealth" ideas from the left and it will give you pause. Basically, you get there more or less the same way most inherit a religion.

So now for the "sort of" part.

Over the last decade and a half or so, our party has been hijacked to the point I find myself situated somewhere between the opposing parties. Here's how you lose a campaign donor millionaire in a red state from your party in just three easy steps:

1. Begin by taking the easy way out. Go for crazy.

In a country generally 40/40/20 (R/D/U), it has been traditionally the job of politicians to first become a candidate by impressing their own party (sometimes by winning a primary) and then to persuade undecided voters and maybe even a few points worth of Dems to make the switch because you're more qualified or your opponent is an idiot.

Someone in my Republican Party decided that was just too much work, so 15 years ago or so we took a look at the electorate and found a loophole: non-voters. How do you win an election without actually having a good platform or convincing anyone outside your party you are worthy of the job? Scare the shit out of your constituents by convincing them the other side is evil and wants to take their money.

You can make it even easier by finding a key word or phrase that strikes a chord with the base and gives the impression an outsider is coming to steal their stuff or tax them unfairly...wait for it... Tea Party!

2. Take a newfound desire to deny evolution, and apply it to the party.

Now that we're appealing to the people who we can scare to the polls, let's make sure to hold on really tight to three things;

- Bibles
- Guns
- Racism

In doing this, we are making a wager that we lose less members of the base to Democrats than we scare into voting, and so far it is working.

Of course there's a cost to winning on this platform, and that would be the loss of more undecideds and a stagnation of ideas and views in the party. It puts us in a position of needing to double down and triple down on crazy every year.

We are literally running campaigns for the 15% of the party that used to stay in their single wide trailer drinking, shooting, praying, and beating their children and spouses, just to make sure they come out and fill the vacuum left by less people joining the party and more and more leaving.

Of course 85% of the party are reasonable people. They may or may not be gun owners, but they want responsible gun ownership. They may or may not go to church every Sunday, but they either believe or respect beliefs.

3. Remove all filters, remove all reality, and the result is a reality TV show none of us want to watch but can't avoid.

Let's keep pushing the idea that the "media" has it in for every Republican. Let's make sure every time we say something bigoted that we call out some overreach of political correctness. Let's call anyone who has facts on their side disloyal.

This is what we've done as a party, and the net result is a circus. Ryan, McConnell, Boehner, and 3 of the 4 Republican Presidential Candidates represent almost exclusively the 15% of crazies I so eloquently described above. (Kasich excluded, please elect him)

Why do we have these people in power? We removed the regular filters and we've now poisoned ourselves on a steady flow of politicians more Toxic than Flint's water.

Have fun in responding

PS - I will be solidly back in the GOP as soon as these three insane asylum moves are corrected.

The Libertarian Party (LP) welcomes everyone that is alienated by both Republican and Democrats. The LP will be on the ballot in all 50 states. So you do have another option. You may be a Libertarian and not even know it.

Well if you can get more people to vote for the LP, they won't lose anymore. If it turns out to be a Hillary vs Trump or Bernie vs Trump, you may want to go to the LP.

I really, really wish we could get a Libertarian that could get enough traction to make a significant run. Penn Jillette maybe?

being a republican or a democrat and bashing anyone is who is not is discriminatory in my opinion. There are very few real differences between views or they way the politicians vote. I rather we had zero political parties

Well said. I have several of the crazies in my own family and it's now to the point that we can't even be in the same room at gatherings because I won't listen to the insanity. Pretty sad.
