Electrical Terminations

I will appreciate seeing some of the reports related to the subject of this forum that show the problems found at conductor terminations in panelboards on the line side, or at any other location.
Also, do you check to see what the required torque values are supposed to be in accordance with 110.3(B) in the NEC?

NOTE: The word panelboard is the correct spelling as in the NEC, the same goes for switchboard.

A stated many times here and in the SOP. An inspection is a visual inspection of readily accessible areas and not a code compliance inspection. Checking or verifying torques is WAY beyond the scope of what we do as inspectors.

I agree. I open the panel and look for obvious problems. What I see I report. I only use the screw driver to open the panel, I do not use it inside the panel. That if for the electrician to do when he comes to repair the issues I reported. Actually here in Florida, I would be violating the law if I did more without an electrical license.

As everyone has stated we do a visual. With that said if I see visual evidence of a loose lug i.e. blackened, darkened or melted insulation, I note this and use the "licensed electrician to evaluate and repair" comment.

A part of my leave behind booklet on home maintenance suggests a licensed electrician perform a thermal scan and check torques etc every 5 years. I don't recall where I found the 5 years but I'll contact a couple of contractors I know and query them. Joe, do you have a suggestion?

By the way, many many years ago I did apartment make readies for a large complex (over 300 units) that had aluminum wiring. Part of our check list was to retorque all of the lugs and (believe it or not check every switch and receptacle). I was always amazed at how many receptacle / switch terminals I could tighten an additional 1/8 to 1/4 turn without straining. Occationally I would find a blackened terminal. Long term leases got checked every two years. I learned first hand why aluminum wiring isn't a great idea.
