We have found using our quad copter on commercial & residential Inspections has become a very valuable tool. It's amazing how many defective roofs, chimneys, chimney crowns, capped vent pipes we have found that could not be viewed from the ground.
It's also a nice added bonus to supply an aerial photo of the property on the report's cover page.

I've seen a number of those cover photos you take. It's very impressive indeed.
Your pictures come out amazing as well. What kind of Quad are you using?

We are using a Copter with a built in GPS, radar & 14m camera. Quad copters are the best we have found for the job. With this said there are restrictions such as trees, wind & rain. Also the quad copters software stops you from flying near airport flight patterns.
These Quad Copters are a GREAT TOOL !
We also lost a copter this week due to a software malfunction this is called a Fly-Away and I watch a bunch of $$$$$ crash into pieces.
We love ours so much as soon as we lost this one we ordered 2 additional units as back up tools. However these are being custom built to our specs. This will add about an extra $ grand $ to the cost but i think it will be money well spent...

What does something like that cost all in? Do you have to assemble it?
Post a picture of the quad copter itself if you don't mind. Does it fly with it's own remote, or is it running off an iPad?

The 2 new custom built copters will run about $3,000 +/- each. They will have real time 1st person view through a video screen as well as 14m still pics, 1080HD video switchable on demand during flight. They will also have there own GPS, WIFI & Radar.

I was told by an attorney that I was not allowed to use those for that because "drones can not be used for commercial use". I am sure he is off base on this but my attorney is looking into it for me to be certain. Anyone else hear of anything like this?

There was a notice that said that in the box of mine when I opened it. Simple solution...do like Keven does. He doesn't use it for commercial purposes, he doesn't sell the service of using it...he just plays with his toy at each inspection and gives away the pics for free. Problem solved!
Well, maybe the problem is solved. This is one of those things I hate to ask an attorney about, even my own. There's no real precedents set, it's new technology, and it will likely never have any ramifications for you even if you take a conservative legal approach to it.

That is pretty much the exact conversation I had with my attorney. I never would have brought it up until a nosy neighbor decided to come over during an inspection and turned out he was a retired attorney with nothing better to do with his time. He gave me the third degree and made some threats that never really amounted to anything but it got me to thinking. He also complained to the realtor during the final walk through. They were more annoyed with him then my egregious airspace violation. I avoid using it in heavily populated areas for now.

I think that's the extent of the liability right there.
Just tell him you had no commercial purpose and were not paid a fee for the toy you played with during your break.

What are the limitations in regards to weather when using one? We try to walk each roof, however if it is wet, icy or crazy high we do not.

Limitations are high winds & rain. Remember the motors are not sealed so they can be damaged by moisture.
I have operated in 25mph wind gusts but it takes a lot of pilot ability and stupidity....
10 to 15 mph winds are typically the max you want to fly in and that is even a bit hairy....

Well, I'm out if you can't play with it during rain or snow...that's all it does for 9 months out of the year...and the other 3 months are windy....lol.
I'm still going to get one...way too much fun to pass up.
