CSST Bonding

During a recent inspection, I found a small section (about 2 ft) of CSST that connected the gas line to the furnace. Is there a length requirement for bonding CSST? Or is it just safer to have all CSST bonded?

All manufacturers that I know of require bonding and have for several years. Some municipalities around here even have upgrade programs which require it if CSST is found in a home.

Are you certain it was CSST and not an appliance connector?

It sounds like it was an appliance connector. It can be really confusing to discern between the two. Appliance connectors are yellow, but CSST usually has a yellow or black jacket.

Chad I would have to agree with Juan. It most likely was a appliance connector and not csst. Did the yellow flex pipe have a name or brand stamped on it. Do you happen to have a picture.

It looks like CSST to me. As the yellow jacket by the Black Iron Pipe is peeled back more than it should be.

Well that does look like CSST. I always take note of the brand and type and look up the instructions if I have a question. They are all different. Some companies have a premium type that had different installation instructions. As Cam said, they all typically require bonding.

I'll try to keep that in mind for the next time I run into CSST.

Looks like somebody made up their own short csst flex connector. According to the Gas-Tite manufacturers rep that talked with our association if there is any csst the system should be bonded.

I went ahead and wrote it up as needing to be bonded.

I don't think I've ever seen a bonded CSST line here

That sure looks like Parker CSST to me. It is okay to direct connect CSST to a non-movable appliance. Some manufacturers (not Parker) indicate their yellow CSST should not be in contact with the metal enclosure at any appliance with a metal vent that protrudes through the roof. It is unusual to see a short made-up connector like that with a steel pipe system. If movable appliance, like a clothes dryer, an approved flexible connector would be required.

I've seen the CSST at the box stores, you still have to take the short written exam there from my understanding to purchase the materials. Not sure that is enforced....

The black jacketed CSST is different. Some don't require the #6 copper bond, they approve the usual #10 bond or the equipment grounding conductor in the appliance (if fed by a branch circuit) as the bond like hard steel.

It gets complicated unfortunately and I see many jurisdictions interpreting the requirements differently.

Really, you have to take an exam at HD? I'm there all the time never seen anything on it.
