The microwave oven's clearance above the stove top was approximately ". Although this appears to be low and may be an inconvenience when cooking on the stove top, only a review of the microwave unit's manufacturer's installation instructions can determine if there is adequate clearance at this installation.

I would use that statement. Other inspectors would like you to believe they would get on-line, look up the mfr. specs. and incorporate that into their write-up. To each his own.

I like the clearance statement and put the onus on the client to look it up and it might be inconvenient. Many hang pretty low and are an obstacle to us tall persons. I hear a lot of inspectors saying "the microwave is too close to the cook top per manufacturer's specifications". I actually took the time to read the installation instructions for most of the predominant manufacturer over-cook top units. None specified a minimum clearance from the cooktop. Nearly all said the top of the microwave unit should be at least 66-inches above the finished floor, and the bottom of the micro/fan/enclosure at least 2-inches above the back top of the range. The instructions also indicated that the wood cabinet the micro is attaching to must be at least 30-inches above the cooktop (as is standard). That's it. I do recall one manufacturer years ago specifying minimum 14-inches above the cooktop on the rating plate, but they don't anymore.

Good topic, I get this question a lot!

It should go a little higher than your biggest pot.

Not the plant, Campbell!

Big problem when homeowners replace a range hood with a micro unit.
